Institutional level seminar conducted by the dept. of history, Wangkhao Government College, Mon

The program was chaired by Shri. W. Wangjin, Asst. Prof. Dept of History. Paper presentation on “ Saltworks: Its Operation in the Production Site” was presented by Smti. Tenosenuo Angami, Asst. Prof. Dept. of History.

The paper presentation incorporated two case studies conducted by the presenter at Peletkie in Peren district of Nagaland and Hutsu in Phek district of Nagaland. Presentation began with an introduction on salt, how the substance is produced and when it was introduced into the present day state of Nagaland. The processes of production and the identification of brine springs was discussed along with the techniques involved at the production sites.

Salt consumption varies from region to region depending on the dietary conditions of a particular group of people in a given region.

Case study 1: Peletkie: presence of 2 ponds, one male and one female. The female pond has a higher concentration of brine

Case study 2: Hutsu: 26 brine springs. Here the traditional methodology involved the use of plantain leaves being dipped into the spring and the white residue on the leaf determined the strength of the brine. If the residue is red, it meant that brine concentration is weak.

The presentation closed with an interactive session whereby comments, questions and queries were put up.
